Big Muddy Drywall
01.2002 - 07.2008

  • Over my years working in the coal industry, I've held multiple positions from outby utility worker all the way to Production Manager. With that wide range of positions came a wide range of experience. I've shoveled many belt lines and built many stoppings. Although when I started working on a CM section I felt that's where my knowledge started growing. I Started with Ventilation, hanging curtains but soon was given the opportunity to advance to a scoop operator. After a few months as a scoop operator, I was given the opportunity to learn how to roof bolt and that's where I really learned about roof control. I Memorized and understood roof control plans to adequately perform my job. Knowing the roof control plan made my transition to a continuous miner a lot easier. Not only did I need to know the roof control plan, but I had to memorize and understand the ventilation plan.
  • As soon as I got my Illinois Mine Examiner's papers, I was offered a section foreman position. Though challenging I found it to be very rewarding. Setting goals and meeting them, interacting and teaching fellow miners was exciting and a challenge. I Strived under pressure and excelled greatly. I was able to take all the knowledge and experience I had learned and use it in my position as Production Manager. This is where I learned what it takes to run a mine. I was able to see all the aspects of mining in this position, from permitting to cleaning the coal. Being able to see the full picture was eye opening for me.
  • On top of that, I travel with MSHA inspectors on a regular basis. I've learned so much from the inspectors I've traveled with over the years. They've taught me about the law and how they inspect and what they look for. I've also learned how to give good mitigating circumstances which would help me on fighting citations. I was also involved in conferencing citations and litigations.
