Activities Leader
Bemidji Middle School
Bemidji
06.2024 - 08.2024
Company Overview: Seasonal program for summers of 2024 and 2025.
During my role as an activities leader at the bemidji middle school i was responsible for 10-25 kids from 7:15 am until 5 pm.
In the morning a teacher from the district would be in the classroom teaching skills and I would help them with questions and deal with any issues, behavioral problems, nurse emergencies, and restroom breaks.
I also participated in games with the children and sat with kids who required more help or reminders.
At 12 pm everyday I would take the kids to lunch and the teacher would leave, after lunch we would return to my classroom where I would run through attendance once again and individually ask every child how they were getting home and make sure it aligned with what the office had communicated to me via attendance sheet.
After attendance I would go over the basic rules for our room and have the kids participate in saying what they thought were good rules to make us have a safe, fun, and enjoyable learning and playing environment.
Once I was through the rules I would have the kids vote on what they wanted to do for the rest of the day.
I would make sure that we had a good balance between sitting and being active so that kids got good exercise and breaks from computers.
I had multiple children with either very ruff home lifes, or behavioral, and mental challenges, having these students as part of my class taught me how to care for, and how to manage these challenges and still leave the kiddo feeling cared for, this included deep conversations with reassurance and understanding for the child, and tactics like breathing methods to calm them.
I also learned that many kids struggled to sleep at home, mostly due to lack of parental supervision.
I then decided it would be beneficial to the kiddos if we had nap time, and the kiddos who wanted to sleep could for thirty to forty five minutes, and the kids who wanted to play games could do so.
I found that this in fact did help the kiddos a lot, I saw happier attitudes throughout the day, willingness to listen and learn, and they came to me most everyday after asking for meditation and rest time.
After rest time I would have the kiddos clean the room and gather their stuff for the pool, at the pool I would watch to make sure nobody was struggling, and that everyone was making safe choices.
Once the kids got out of the pool we played games in the gym, such as color tag, basketball, or parachute games.
At around four
Clock everyday we would grab snack and games for the pickup table where we would wait for parents, we would also grab backpack buddies or extra food for any child who didnt have much or anything to eat at home.
I would often rotate playing games until the kiddos parents arrived or their bus.
I got to know parents and had to sometimes talk to them about behaviors in the classroom.
I thoroughly enjoyed my job and believe there is no bad kids, just kids with challenges, and I want to use my life to help kiddos in need.
