  • I am a Certified FTO (Field Training Officer) and Recruitment Advisor responsible for the recruitment (via community drives and job fairs), training and over all preparation of newly hired corrections officers
  • I conduct thorough background investigations and oversee every aspect of the hiring process to ensure that Miami Dade County guidelines are consistently adhered to from drug tests, polygraph testing, both psychological and medical evaluations and proper certifications
  • Upon the completion of all requirements, I ensure that all qualified individuals are hired into the department
  • I am also responsible for operating the Miami Dade County Corrections Academy where I am Certified in various certifications, such as CIT Instructor (Crises intervention Training on how to adequately deescalate potentially violent and suicidal inmates assigned to the Forensic Psych Unit
  • I worked with Level one up to Level three suicidal and mentally I'll inmates, Fire Life Safety Instructor (teaching the different levels of fire response within all facilities for role clarity, and in the event of a fire to work in concert with the Miami Dade fire and police departments to ensure that all procedures for proper evacuation were met, thus reducing the risk of inmate elopement, and enhancing the probability of a safe outcome)
  • Defensive Tactics and Firearms Instructor for new hire trainees, I conduct in service firearms qualifications, I also teach authorized use of force defensive/ offensive tactics, correct protocol in regards to all aspects of Miami Dade Corrections
  • Lastly, a four week extensive training across all shifts culminating in an overall evaluation of preparedness for the departments new hires

Job overview

  • As a Miami Dade Corrections Officer I maintained Care, Custody and control of inmates incarcerated at our various facilities including Pretrial Detention Center, Metro West Detention Center and Turner Guilford Knight Detention facility
  • I was tasked with conducting daily head counts for accountability of all incarcerated personnel placed under my watch, in addition to ensuring a safe and productive environment for anywhere between 74-82 inmates (housed for varying degrees of misconduct from misdemeanors to felonies)
  • I conducted both cell searches and personnel strip searches (conducted as necessary) for reasons of both safety and security
  • My responsibilities also entailed the inner-facility escorting of inmates to all necessary locations and appointments from court, medical / attorney visits to Special Housing
  • I also transported inmates off grounds for various reasons such as inmates being hospitalized in Ward D (for more serious medical treatments such as terminal illness and surgery) to the transferring of high profile inmates to their designated destinations
  • I have also been extensively trained and have a tremendous amount of experience in working with Death Row inmates (of a high profile nature) with varying levels of aggression and special needs
  • I also assist with meeting the recreational, feeding and medication dispersement of all of the inmates housed on my floor
  • Lastly, as the need arose I have worked Intake where I was responsible for property inventory, fingerprinting, classification (both medical and threat level) uniform issuance and unit qualification and placement of all incoming inmates into the facility
