Special Day Class Teacher

The Children's Home of Stockton
Stockton, CA
08.1990 - 06.2001

I began my teaching career as a Special Day Class Teacher with the Children's Home of Stockton. It was both a Residential and Day Treatment Program for abused and neglected youth ages 12 through 18. There was a Residential Sex Offender program. Teachers worked closely with clinical staff to provide a treatment program that addressed the students' educational, social and emotional needs. In addition to teaching the core academic subjects, I also taught music. Over the course of 8 years, what started as a 7 member trumpet class, eventually became the school's Marching Band program during my last 4 years with the Children's Home of Stockton. The Marching Band included 65 of the school's 100 student population. The Marching band included a full brass choir of horns, a Drum and Bell line, an Identification Unit, Tall flags, a Majorette, and a Drum Major. The Band performed for community events, in local parades, and Band Reviews. 99% of the students had no prior music or marching experience.

  • Taught to a diverse population of students.
  • Met with parents and guardians to discuss student progress and increase participation for comprehensive and long-term student success.
  • Helped learners of all abilities build learning and study skills to promote life-long educational goals.
  • Delegated tasks to teacher assistant.
  • Taught students in various stages of cognitive, linguistic, social and emotional development.
  • Taught after-school and summer enrichment programs.
  • Mentored and counseled students with adjustment and academic problems.
  • Provided instruction to special needs students.
  • Observed and assessed student performance, keeping thorough records of progress.
  • Performed student background reviews to ascertain learning deficiencies and strengths in order to develop tailored lessons based on student needs.
  • Contributed thoughts and ideas at monthly staff meetings.
  • Developed IEP's based on each student's assessments and prior IEP's, academic and behavioral histories.
