Prepare patients for surgery. This encompasses outpatients for scheduled surgery, ER patients added on for urgent or emergent surgery and inpatients from any unit in the hospital including ICU and Labor and Delivery. Care involves screening patient appropriateness for surgery and reaching out to surgeon and anesthesiologist for concerns based on patient interview and assessment. Additional care involves completing preop checklist, preop teaching, starting IVs, drawing lab work, performing EKGs, assisting anesthesia team with placement of invasive monitoring and central venous access lines as well as nerve blocks, spinal anesthestic injection and placement of epidural catheters. Communication with multiple other disciplines involved in care of patients is imperative.

Provide care to patients in PACU phase II, being prepared for discharge. This care involves assessment, teaching patient and support person about post op care per surgeon and anesthesia instructions through verbal and written instructions as well as demonstration of drain care upon discharge.

My personal employment agreement in Surgical Services and HDH Forest has included working both scheduled shifts and lunch relief in PACU Phase I as well as working in Pre Admission Testing and Ambulatory Surgery Center as needed.

Provide pre, intra, post procedure and discharge care to patients undergoing image guided procedures. Procedures range from ultrasound guided central venous access placement, thoracentesis, paracentesis, ultrasound or CT guided biopsies and drain placements, as well as complex vascular procedures under fluoroscopy to restore blood flow or stop internal bleeding. Care provided under guidance of Interventional Radiologists as well as Vascular Surgeons performing cases with and without O.R. teams in Interventional Radiology. Assist in all department related functions such as scheduling, charge nurse duties, stocking supplies and cleaning.
