Summary

I grew up in rural South Dakota and worked hard on our ranch throughout high school. Now I attend college in Grand Forks where I am majoring in Environmental Science and minoring in Sustainability Studies. I took a pathways position with the USDA-NRCS in the summer of 2022 which continued in the summer of 2023. I enjoyed this rewarding, challenging, and enjoyable opportunity and look to continue my career with USDA-NRCS.

Student Trainee Soil Conservationist

  • Gained more experience with the NRCS and a deeper understanding of how the agency operates by working with experienced professionals in the NRCS.
  • Attended many trainings and events including the Grazing Management Bus Tour, Monarch Butterfly Workshop, Soil Training with Kent Cooley, Shelterbelt Establishment Training, and more.
  • Learned from employees in surrounding field offices while helping certify conservation practices.
  • Operated the Grazing Tool to make a mock grazing plan and assessed the soil, plant, and livestock health benefits that could result from the grazing plan.

  • This job required the use of heavy equipment and a lot of time on my feet accompanied by hard labor.

Ranch Hand/Laborer

  • I worked on this ranch full-time during the summer breaks between school years
  • I worked when available during the school year, primarily during calving season
  • Duties I performed while working on Echo Valley Ranch include: Operating farm and ranch machinery including trucks and tractors, helping in the haying operation by raking, baling, or moving hay bales, feeding, watering and working livestock, cleaning and bedding livestock pens, building and repairing fences, repairing and replacing various items around the ranch, mowing the lawn, trimming trees, and many other miscellaneous tasks.
