• Taught 8th grade English Language Arts, literature, speaking, and writing, including the following units: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, No Promises in the Wind, Holocaust Literature, Poetry, Argumentative Writing, the Speech, A Raisin in the Sun, Crossing Stones, and the Short Story Reading and Writing Unit.
• Developed and implemented creative lesson plans and projects that encouraged student collaboration, risks in learning, and choice (Shakespeare performance project, family budget assignment for No Promises in the Wind, a text set during the Great Depression).
• Incorporated technology to increase differentiation and critical thinking (student-created podcasts about books, audiobooks, and student choice on assignments).
• Implemented a community of student writers, inspired by the text, Lessons That Change Writers (Nancie Atwell).
• Conducted student and peer feedback writing conferences.
• Found and led a student club, the Essence Club, which celebrates the achievements, food, culture, music, literature, and history of the African diaspora.
• Collaborated with team teachers to develop interdisciplinary skills and content in the curriculum.
