Having grown up in a mixed race family, I learned at a young age that it’s not the color of your skin that makes you who you are. It is the way you speak to others and how you treat your coworkers, authority figures and subordinates. In an authority position years ago, I found myself enamored with the methods or our custodial staff and the care that they put into their work. At the time, one of the more familiar faces in the department mentioned to me that since he had to spend many of his waking hours in the building, he might as well feel at home. And he wouldn’t allow gum to stick on the floor of his home, so he scraped and used a freezing spray to get gum that our lovely guests chose to spit out, off of our floors. I called him Mr. Francis just as I called the President of the company Mr. Bell. Thus, my achievements are my way with everyone. The smiles I can create and the joy and energy that I can share.
