As an infantry team leader, I am responsible for personnel and equipment accountability, developing my direct subordinates and peers, and managing small teams of four to nine soldiers in both permissive and adverse conditions. This role strengthened my instructional abilities. My leadership frequently entrusted me with the freedom to develop and lead courses for my unit as well as foreign and domestic partner forces. Examples include developing and executing a lesson plan for a combatives course for my platoon. I was also assigned as lead instructor and range safety for numerous marksmanship ranges for foreign partners and outside organizations. In addition, I provided one-on-one instruction to dozens of individuals on the operation of M153 CROWS to increase my company's readiness. This position refined my leadership skills by making me responsible for my team's whereabouts and well-being, and being accountable for all their assigned equipment during a year-long overseas tour in a combat zone.
