Power & Recovery Boiler Superintendent at Port Townsend Paper Company
In charge of the daily operation the Port Townsend Power, Recovery, and Utilities plant. In this role i was responsible for plant safety, day to day operation of the plants CE recovery boiler, power boiler, turbine generator, waste treatment facility and all other utilities at the plant.
In charge of the plants 3 CE Chemical Recovery Boilers, 2 Sets of Evaporators, and 2 stage HBLOX system. Responsibilities included day to day operation of the plant, ensuring environmental compliance, managing the mills liquor cycle, planning outages, prioritizing maintenance with the plants OMC, Submitting RFQ's, and awarding bids to contractors. Also responsible for the safety, and management of 22 hourly union direct reports, and 2 salary Recovery Boiler engineers. Prioritizing, and working with the plants capital group on strategic projects to improve plant reliability. Most recently leading the plan to idle, and lay up the Power, and Recovery plant, as well as the mills soda inventory.
Returned to the Luke Facility to help fill the vacant Power, and Recovery Managers position. Helped plan, an execute the spring annual outage. Also helped plan the 2019 TG11 Minor outage.
Returned to Androcoggin to the Process managers position. Worked on the successful start up of Recovery Boiler #1, "B" Evaporators, and Concentrators, and "B" Lime Kiln.
Coordinated day to day operations, and maintenance of three Power Boilers, and two 30MW GE steam turbines, as well as coal unloading facility, and water treatment plant. Was tasked with making #24, & 25 Power Boilers MACT compliant for HCL, SO2, and Mercury. Help develop, and execute the use of Sorbacal SP in the flue gas to meet HCL compliance. Planning for weekly, monthly and annual maintenance outages.
Responsible for shift operations of the Power, and Recovery, Lime Kilns, Evaporators, Turbine Generators, Water Treatment, Hydroelectric, and Waste Water treatment departments, as well as mill steam, and electric balance, environmental compliance, crew scheduling, time approval, and leading shift crew safety meetings. Also coordinating, and overseeing emergency repairs on shift.
Responsibilities included the day to day operation of the Androscoggin Power Plants equipment. Making rounds, adjustments, testing, on Recovery Boilers, Power Boilers, Water lab, Air compressors, Hydroelectric stations, Water treatment plant, Pump house, Turbine generators, Evaporator, and Concentrator trains, Demineralizers, Condensate polishers, Bark, and ash systems.
Most recently have spend a great deal of time working with capital engineering to purchase and replace the plant's #8 power boiler. I was tasked with reducing UPE's and to reduce electrical purchases. I oversaw the move to putting the plant's steam headers into automatic control which has turned the plant from a net purchaser of electricity to a net seller and has helped to reduce UPE's. I have planned ordered parts for and oversaw the last 5 annual outages on the turbine generators and recently put in charge of the power boiler operation and executed the spring 2024 PB7 outage. The past 3 outages were safety incident free for the mills personal. I Participate in the weekly, monthly safety meetings and also engage personal on safety areas of concern daily by performing V&V audits on a regular basis.
Worked to identify and improve hog fuel throughput on PTPC's #10 Power Boiler. Worked to oversee the idling and layup of Verso Wisconsin Rapids paper mill. Oversaw the startup, an commissioning of the rebuilt RB1 at Wisconsin Rapids after a 22 million dollar furnace replacement in 2019, Focused on improving Precipitator reliability, and had no opacity occurrences in Q1 of 2020 for the 1st time at this plant in 4 years. Worked to reduce the number of washes on the plants DCE's, and managed to get a 2 week (50%) improvement in time between washes. Worked on chronic spout refractory failure issue that had plagued the plant for a few years, and have been successful with no failures since the last annual outage. Planned the 2020 Annual outage, and coordinated capital improvements for the 2020 outage. Contributed to an annual R-Gap reduction through improvements in operations, quality, safety and administration at the Wisconsin Rapids, Androscoggin, and Luke facilities.
Planned, directed, coordinated and assigned manpower to efficiently execute the 2016, 2017, and 2019 mill total steam outage, and startup with zero injuries, and no major exceptions. Developed the plan, and execution of total dry sewer outage 2017
Lead operations in the development of SOP's, TCC's, as well as improving the lockout, tag out procedures at the plants.
