Work History
Lock and Dam Operator
U,S Army Corps of Engineers
04.2004 - 12.2023
I locked barges north and south on the Illinois waterway on a 12 hour rotating shift. As lock and dam operator, I assisted barges onto the upper guide wall in preparation to lock. On windy days, I threw a handy line to assist barges to the upper guide wall easier. I opened and closed valves in order to fill and empty the lock chamber. I operated gates to allow vessels and pleasure craft to navigate through the lock. I ran an assortment of power tools: power saws, cordless drills, chain saws, pole pruners, hand tools, etc. I operated a riding lawn mower to cut grass and used a weed eater to cut weeds. I swept out buildings to keep them clean. I painted, greased, and checked and maintained batteries of work carts that we used for transportation. I operated a riding lawn mower and work truck with plows attached to remove snow. I also spread ice melt throughout the sidewalks, parking lot and work site. When working the night shift, I swept and mopped floors, and replenished cleaning supplies for the next shift. I maintained a 21 gate dam to maintain water level. I also used tow haulage to pull multiple barges out of the lock.
