- Students in preschool through grade five spend thirty minutes a week in the library with their class. With the library coordinator, they are exposed to a variety of authors, illustrators and genres. Critical thinking is encouraged through group discussions of the books that are read together. When the classroom teacher assigns projects, often the students will be directed to source materials in the library that will assist them with their research. Students learn how to navigate the different sections of the library, enabling them to locate their selections independently. Students also learn personal responsibility through reinforced goals to return library materials on time and in good condition. While students in grades six through eight no longer have designated class time in the library, they have full access to library materials, and are encouraged to utilize the library resources.
- In addition to preparing lessons for each of the groups that come into the library each week, the library coordinator monitors student accounts by checking books in and out, putting items on reserve, notifying students of overdue materials, and creating new accounts for each new student.
- The library coordinator oversees the acquisition of new materials, ensuring a diverse and up-to-date collection that catered to the needs of all patrons.
- The library coordinator maintains an organized physical space within the library facility by overseeing proper shelving techniques and adherence to layout standards.
- The library coordinator also organizes and runs the annual Scholastic Book Fair. This involves regular check ins with a Scholastic Representative leading up to the fair to plan out specific details. Also, setting up the space, working the register, coordinating with teachers a time for their classes to visit the fair, and staying open after hours to allow for parents to shop at the fair. Finally, preparing the financial statements with earnings from the fair to be presented to school bookkeeper. The earnings from the book fair make up the entire library budget, including the cost of the Follett library software. During my most recent year as the library coordinator, our school had the most successful book fair sales to date.
