Nuclear Scaffold Builder

02.2020 - 03.2021
  • The workday usually begins with a pre-job brief, and during the briefing, you talk about the possible hazards that could be in the area
  • It may be heat stress, it may be working at heights, it may be other workgroups working in the area
  • So you talk about what are the mitigating Strategies
  • If it's heat stress then we get a wet-bulb test to check the temperature in the area
  • Once the correct temperature is identified, state times are issued for the work area
  • We also lookout to make sure everyone stays hydrated at all times
  • Before erecting scaffolding you must put up caution tape with a sign on all possible entry points to your work area
  • The caution tape is to identify your work area
  • Make sure the signs have the supervisor's name, extension, and what are the Hazards in the area
  • We wore PPE at all time because you never know where the hazard will come from
  • We practice our covid rules by wearing masks 100% and staying 6ft apart as much as we could
  • If there's an injury make sure it got reported immediately
  • We built scaffolding throughout the power plant, so we had to make sure our harness and lanyard were inspected daily.

Nuclear Scaffold Builder/Foreman

BHI Energy (Wolf Creek Nuclear Power Plant)
07.2019 - 10.2019
  • So in this position, I was responsible for directing my crew on a day-to-day basis
  • Part of that was making sure everyone had the correct PPE
  • Then also make sure that all the PPE was inspected on a daily basis
  • We built scaffolding throughout the power plant, so we had to make sure our harness and lanyard were inspected daily
  • We had a drop item prevention method in place
  • We took two minutes to survey the area for potential holes in penetrations, if so we cover them before erecting any scaffold
  • During the take two we looked around to see if any other hazards were in the area and how could we mitigate them
  • Conducted safety meetings first thing in the morning
  • Walk through jobs and assign crews with work to be performed
  • Speak with GF to request combustible permit if needed
  • Fill out JSA and go over any permits with crew
  • Know locations of assembly points and evacuation points
  • Ensure scaffold crews are working safely and productively
  • Conducted inspections and safety audits in work areas, and on all scaffolds built.

Nuclear Scaffold Builder Foreman

Fluor Corporation (Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant)
09.2018 - 06.2019
  • In the Nuclear Industry, we use an acronym for safety witch is S.T.A.R
  • Stop - Do not rush into your jobs, you must stop long enough to think about what you are about to do
  • Think - Once you stop, you have the time to think, so that you can make the best choice
  • A
  • What are my ALTERNATIVES or choices
  • B
  • What is the BEHAVIOR that I will choose
  • C
  • What might be the CONSEQUENCES of the action I am about to take
  • Act - Once you decide on your best choice, you must act upon it
  • Remember, you are making choices
  • Review - Did you do the job as safely as possible
  • The nuclear plant is a procedure-driven industry, so you must work according to the procedures
  • Some of my responsibilities as foreman were making sure my crew did a proper take two before any job
  • We took 2 minutes to look around and see what potential hazards were in the area, and what can we do to mitigating them
  • If the plant is running made sure we had earplugs
  • We made sure the work area had yellow caution tape with a sign identifying the Hazards in the work area
  • We built scaffolding throughout the power plant, so we had to make sure our harness and lanyard were inspected daily
  • When working at heights, we made sure to inspect the PPE before climbing
  • We made sure to be tied off 100% if over 4ft off the ground
  • We looked out for others while working in the area
  • When working in a heat stress area, make sure everyone stays hydrated that's working in that area
  • We made sure to know the heat stress stay times for that area
  • If someone wanted to come into your work area take the time to stop and explain to them the hazards in the area
  • I inspect to make sure the scaffold is built properly, and by procedure with handrails at the correct height between 38-45 inches for the top rail.

  • Build scaffold according to procedures use and adherence
  • Participated in daily safety meetings before start of shift
  • Wore all PPE and followed all safety rules
  • In the Nuclear plant, Clearances play a major role
  • Part of the Clearance program is knowing your boundaries, doing a walk down if you choose to ensure the tags and the grounds are correct
  • Clearances and their associated tags are controlled by Operations
  • We as a worker was responsible for making sure the Clearance Holder (who is the Supervisor who is supervising the work) has signed on the clearance in eSOMS
  • Which prevents anyone from operating the equipment or removing the tags that are protecting us
  • We work in Confined Spaces
  • What confirms a confined space is being large enough for an employee to enter and perform work
  • It has restricted or limited means for entry or exit
  • It's not designed for continuous occupancy
  • One of the main things we had to know was the confined space permitted or non-permitted required
  • That determines if the confined space needed a hole watch or not
  • We also check that the o2 monitor has been bump tested before we used it
  • That way to make sure the air is safe to enter the confined space
  • We made sure all scaffolds that were built had a proper sign to notify workers if it was harness required or not
  • Situational awareness is a must because there's so many things going on around you and you must be ready to mitigate any possible dangers.
