When I deployed to Iraq in 2003-2004, it was one of the most challenging and defining experiences of my life. I carried out humanitarian missions, working to train the Iraqi people on how to protect themselves in an uncertain and often dangerous environment. Over the course of my deployment, I went on more than 30 missions—some involved escorting personnel, while others were security details for construction workers helping to rebuild local infrastructure.
Each mission brought new challenges, but I stayed focused on the bigger picture—ensuring the safety of those around me while contributing to a mission greater than myself. Navigating unpredictable situations on the road, staying vigilant, and adapting to ever-changing conditions became second nature. Despite the risks, I made it home safely, a testament to my training, my team, and the discipline instilled in me.
