I teach because I believe all students, if given equal opportunity, can learn. When students are given the correct resources, feel represented in class, and are being taught current and interesting topics their interest in the class increases. Being a world language educator facilitates the fulfillment of most of these goals. What I mean by correct resources is, having materials/tool/essentials around the classroom for all students to use when needed. Implementing classroom management strategies about turning in assignments, finding materials from a missed day also help students. As a student having these strategies and procedures set during the school year helped me stay organized and focused on my schoolwork. Students’ representation in class is very important, they have a sense of belonging. Listening to students’ ideas and experiences, aids in building a classroom environment where they feel comfortable in expressing themselves. Showcasing ranges of identities and peoples throughout the course also makes them feel seen and welcome. Teaching class interests in a relevant manner increases students’ motivation in class. Being a world language educator, incorporating students’ interests is part of the teaching process, giving students perspectives of the same interest in Spanish speaking countries. My role in the classroom is to aid students in their learning, however they need it. Some students might prefer one on one instruction and specificity with how directions are given, others might not need that extra boost. Walking around the classroom and checking in on students. This helped me as a student, I didn’t like openly asking for help, so having the teacher walk around and ask all students if they needed any help eased some of that anxiety of raising my hand. Reassurance to all students is beneficial to all learners as well. This also allows for me to know that all students know and feel like they can learn in my classroom. Like I mentioned before giving students the correct resources to learn in the classroom, either from me or other peers. A good teacher builds meaningful connections with students outside of the classroom. They care about students’ well-being, attend clubs/sports, and reaching out to parents. This gives hindsight to the teacher on the kinds of students I have, which in turn can help me make sure they are represented in the class. As a world language educator of Spanish, it is important for me that students become bilingual/multilingual. Understanding more than language can open a door of opportunities for students. They get more job opportunities and build connections with those who speak other languages. Being bilingual/multilingual is increasing in popularity in the world, being a factor of teaching that skill gives me a sense of purpose. Connecting students with ideas and a language that is outside of their norm.
