Founded the reptile education program For Goodness Snakes in the late 1990's and travel with reptiles to schools, camps, scouts, churches and individuals to educate students about reptiles of all types.
Conducted "Outdoor Skills Camps" each summer for incoming 2nd through 7th graders. Camp focused on fishing, archery, survival skills, first aid, camp set up and outdoor cooking.
I started an elective on my campus called "Outdoor Trails". The course began as a one semester class with one section. It evolved into three full-time, year-long instructors with almost half of the student body participating in the course in any given year. In the course the students earned their Hunter Safety Cards, Boater Education Cards, and CPR/First Aid Certification. A competitive NASP archery team evolved out of the curriculum and a campus team competed in the state tournament perennially. Students in the course traveled across the United States and Costa Rica exploring the great outdoors through camping, hiking, fishing, hunting and ecotourism. To facilitate these excursions, I created Doc's Memorial Outdoor Adventures, a 501c3 non-profit. The non-profit offsets or pays for the supplies and costs of the excursions. During the course of a school year, I will spend between 400-600 hours afield with the students or in preparation for the excursions. Doc's facilitates hunting, fishing and camping trips through the Texas Youth Hunting Program, Texas Wildlife Association and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Association. It also exists because of the generosity of landowners and dedicated volunteers that help with the excursions. These volunteers are former students, student parents, or educators who want to give back to a program that impacted their lives.
