Vietnamese Buddhist Youth Association (GDPT Chanh Phap/Bao Quang)
I volunteered at a Vietnamese Buddhist camp from ages 6 to 17, an organization similar to scouting that emphasizes spiritual and personal development. The camp fosters leadership, teamwork, and strong moral values among its members. Every Sunday, from 9 AM to 3 PM, we gathered at a temple, where I initially enrolled as a student, learning both the Vietnamese language and Buddhist ethics and practices.
The organization operates with a structured ranking system based on age and training, which defines each member’s role and responsibilities. At age 13, I was promoted to the rank of "Thiếu Nam" (teenage male leadership), where I began developing essential life skills through community activities and annual camping trips. In this role, I mentored a small group of younger students, guiding them through teamwork exercises such as scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, and solving puzzles/riddles. I also gained valuable outdoor survival skills, including starting a fire, tying functional knots, providing first aid, and building shelters.
This leadership experience taught me responsibility and helped me discover my passion for helping others, offering valuable insights into my own strengths and potential.
