Locomotive Engineer/Train Conductor

  • Start each shift with a safety briefing and discuss weather conditions, Hazards and daily objectives.
  • Daily walk around inspection of the locomotive checking fuel levels, engine oil, compressor oil, coolant levels, wheels, brake shoes, brake rigging and sand levels. Also looking for any hazards on the steps, handrails or walkways.
  • Communicate switching movements with conductors, managers, dispatchers and BNSF crews.
  • Organize a switch list plan for the day.
  • Update railcar inventory on a BNSF computer system.
  • Operate the locomotive at a safe and efficient speed.
  • Keep an eye on rail conditions and derail locations throughout the day.
  • Verify main reservoir air pressure is set between 130-140 psi before and during shoving movements.
  • Perform Brake tests before separating from rail cars.
  • Utilize the automatic brake valve as much as possible to ensure a smooth stop while protecting vehicles inside the autoracks.
  • Join railcars together at 2mph or less.
  • Troubleshoot and fix air and simple mechanical issues.
  • Perform light maintenance on the locomotive such as adding oil or changing brake shoes.
  • Set and release a sufficient number of handbrakes on the locomotive or railcars as needed.
  • Protect shoving movements by giving car counts.
  • Inspecting gaps and switch points before and after throwing a switch.
  • Maintain a safe distance from the tracks during movements.
  • Looking for movement from any direction at any time while crossing the tracks.
  • Ability to communicate and problem solve with BNSF Dispatchers and all levels of staff during high pressure situations.
