Dance Instructor

Sarah Lawrence College
09.2016 - 04.2017
  • Company Overview: Sonna Schupak, supervisor; Peggy Gould, supervisor
  • Being part of the college environment exposed me to an opportunity with the Early Childhood and Development Center (ECC) here on campus
  • This was the first time the class was offered while I’d been in the Sarah Lawrence dance program, and this being my final year at the school, I snatched at the chance
  • The children were of a diverse age range from 5 to 8 and as well had varying levels of investment
  • Myself and two other students were in charge of structuring the class with sections devoted to anatomy, across the floor, and dance making
  • We felt it was important to work within the pedagogy already set forth in the ECC’s model that’s followed the writings of John Dewey
  • Working in this model opened myself to those moments where I found the children’s minds wandering off, I would have to find a way to relate it back to something that would engage their attention to bring them back into the lesson
  • Having gone to a Montessori school myself, it was a fun bookending moment as well in my educational career
