The volunteer's position description is created for the individual volunteer. Some general statements apply: 

* Work under direction of dean and designated leadership staff members 
* Be attentive to maintaining a safe environment and to safety and well-being of villagers at all times
  
General Responsibilities of All Positions: Those that apply to volunteers: 

* Be familiar with and abide by specific policies set forth in the "Personnel Policies," which are designated by Concordia Language Villages administration and individual Village deans.
* For those staff members in a Village: Be advised the entire staff of each Village is under the direction of and is responsible to the dean. While some positions are supervised by other staff, the dean retains ultimate authority and responsibility for the Village. 
* Speak the target language as much as possible.
* Model standards for behavior and be sensitive to the health and welfare of the villagers.
* Seek out opportunities to interact with international staff members related to cultural exchange.
  
If residential:

* Live in community living arrangements, assigned according to sex; nearly all positions include living and sleeping in a cabin or other housing unit with villagers (participants) of the same sex; positions that do not include living with villagers do include living with other staff members of the same sex. 
* Be prepared to use communal showers and bathrooms, assigned according to sex.
  
Minimum Qualifications

* Must be a legal adult
* Previous experience as a summer staff member (or regular employee) at Concordia Language Villages (if not, apply for the "volunteer" position that does not indicate "former staff")
* Education or experience related to the specific volunteer activities

Ability to assist villagers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, injury); possess strength, physical ability, and endurance to maintain constant supervision of villagers; observe villager behavior, assess its appropriateness and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques; possess visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the cabin group; sex that matches the sex of villagers living in the cabin.

As part of our application process, you arrange for the submission of two reference forms, if you are a new applicant or if on your first day of volunteering there will have been a 12-month or more break since your last day of employment or volunteering with Concordia Language Villages. Reference providers must be professional references  those who know your work, classroom abilities, or work with children. At least one reference form must be from a current or recent supervisor who knows you in a position of responsibility. The person who makes the hiring decision cannot provide a reference. In some cultures, it is appropriate to ask a family member for a reference; in the United States, it is not.
  
You provide your reference writers' contact information (e-mail address) and the system contacts them automatically.
  
You MUST provide an e-mail address for each reference writer. The application system will automatically e-mail your reference writers; as a result, your reference writers will be able to download the reference form to their computer and then upload the completed form directly onto our system, and you will be able to track whether we have received the reference form. The process is quick, simple, and confidential. Note, if you are applying for many positions, you may wish to let your writers know they will receive a request for each position; they may upload the same reference form for each position. If you cannot provide an e-mail address for your reference writers or provide an incorrect e-address, contact vilstaff@cord.edu. Log back into this application system to assure that your reference providers have submitted the reference form.
  
SPECIAL NOTE to applicants for FRENCH programs: "French" and "French Voyageur" applications are separate. If you indicated an interest in working in both, you must apply separately for both. French hiring managers don't see French Voyageur applications, and French Voyageur hiring managers don't see French applications. (French Voyageur is an outdoor adventure programtent camping and canoeing; 80 percent of applicants must be certified lifeguards.)
