  • I helped manage the Apheresis section at the Sullivan Memorial Blood Donor Center
  • I work directly with donors to prepare them for the donation process
  • This includes helping with demographics, questionnaires, phlebotomy, and making sure donors are well before leaving the premises
  • The process from start to finish includes setting up a TRIMA for an apheresis collection, platelets or plasma, correcting any error or alarm that occurs during the donation and cleaning the machines
  • I also processed whole blood units for future use, to include sending out necessary testing
  • I performed daily QC and temperature checks for the ADAM, Horiba, and multiple refrigerators
  • Wrote SOPs and performed validations for new equipment

  • I performed a multitude of jobs while I was stationed at Joint Base-Lewis McChord
  • Initially I worked as the office assistant, directly under my chain of command
  • This included filing paperwork, personnel accountability, proofreading, creating Microsoft documents (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), making and maintaining copies of documents from all personnel and handling any task set before me from my higher ups
  • I performed these tasks for close to a year, each day bringing something new
  • From this position, I was deployed to Iraq for nine months running a fully functional lab
  • We set up a 32 bed, tier-3 hospital in the heart of Iraq
  • Our lab's main focus was taking care of our patients first and foremost
  • Besides daily QC, temperature checks, and inventory, we ran a multitude of tests including chemistry, hematology, immunology, and blood bank
  • I performed phlebotomy (regular and apheresis), CBCs, wet-preps, a multitude of panels, influenza testing, type and screens, crossmatches, ISO-titer dilutions, and releasing blood products
  • Our second mission was shipping and receiving blood from Kuwait to 18 other locations throughout the area
  • We would receive and ship units at least once a day, maintaining all necessary paperwork and on top of caring for patients
  • I also helped write SOPs and ensure the lab was CLIA certified for future military personnel who took over for us
  • Throughout the rest of my time at Joint Base-Lewis McChord, I maintained military operations and practiced setting up our hospital in field settings to always be prepared to be sent overseas again.

  • This entire process was companied with continuing training within the Army, maintain standards and performing tasks outside of the lab.
