Since I was a kid, I loved to write about surfing to try to capture the excitement of it. Overtime, this contributed to my enjoyment of reading and writing about a multitude of subjects and genres. By reflecting on the larger dynamics of the global surf community, I am inspired to experience the diplomatic advantages of surfing that hold so much potential for the future. From the climatology aspect of tracking storms and pin-pointing sea level rise, to the social side that connects millions that share in common this hobby, there is so much to speculate on and strive toward on the subject of surf.
In the summer of 2019, I was selected to represent the United States for the World Baseball Tournament Classic in Italy. The journey stared with a series of games against a local team in Rovigo, during which we home-stayed with the opposing players' families who had met a very limited number of Americans previously. I can say after the experience that I have hit a home run in a small Italian ballpark, created during World War II, when baseball was introduced to the country by American soldiers. After a week of delicious homemade pasta, the team headed to Nettuno Italy, a beach town a while outside of Rome. We slept in a campsite surrounded by our international competition, and we made friends with our neighbors from Australia, Germany, and South Korea. After defeating the Koreans in an intense semi final game, we lost the championship to Japan. Placing second in an international tournament is an accomplishment for the island of Alameda, California and I am proud to have contributed to our success.
