Student Researcher

Rutgers–New Brunswick
New Brunswick, NJ
Jun 2016 - Aug 2018

  • Worked one on one with the chair of Microbiology, Dr Max Haggblom and collaborators, Dr Lee Kerkhof, Dr Aamani Rupukala.
  • Research: Member of the Haggblom cohort researching the degradation patterns of Pharmaceutical Personal Care Products (PPCP's) in various bodies of water that include but are not limited to, the Hudson and Raritan Rivers. Conducted water column analyses of salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH and temperature of various locations along the Raritan River. Pharmaceutical water analysis was done using LC-MS/MS and the degradation of PPCP's was tracked via RP-HPLC. DNA of active enrichment cultures and isolates was obtained via phenol chloroform extraction and purified using Ampur beads. The RNA was then prepped for sequencing with Minion by doing three stages of PCR amplification, an operon amp, an overhang amp and a barcode amp. QA/QC was done after each amplification, and a bead cleanup was done before the subsequent amplification.
  • That research has been continued by other members of the lab and subsequently turned into a PhD.
  • Presented research progress at Raritan River Consortium 2017.
  • Presented research progress at the SEBS annual microbiology symposium 2016, 2017.
