  • Duties SummarySince becoming a COll my duties include the supervision of at least four employees at a time. Throughout the work week providing a safe and controlled environment for both the public and the offenders along with my coworkers. My duties as Shift Commander include getting a briefing from the previous Shift Commander. I then fill out any pertinent information on the Shift Briefing form to pass along to those working the shift. I fill out all required documentation for off ground work crews including area count sheets and match offender ID's before they leave to work. I hold a briefing with the Major, Captain, Case Managers, Nurse, and Office Personnel. I ask them if they have any information they need passed on. I use DCIS to add or remove offenders on transport days making sure all numbers are good. I ensure all requirements, documentation and duties of each assigned post, control, housing units, visitation, yard, etc are complete by staff. I do rounds on the facility and sign all required documents. Along with the above duties I also have the following duties: Patrol housing units Inspect rooms, doors, windows and locks Check on the welfare of offenders and staff Conduct both formal and informal counts Issue inmate mail, state issued items, cleaning supplies Conduct searches of offenders, cells and common areas Complete and log all pertinent work orders Stand watch in the yard, dining hall, recreation and other security posts Patrol perimeter on foot and conduct unscheduled checks of locks and other security devices Check status of all visitors and volunteers Observe and document offenders behavior Enforce all applicable rules and regulations by writing incident reports and verbal interaction with offender population Serve as a lead worker, mentoring and training Lead briefings at the start of shift along with briefing those higher in command Sign out equipment and issue keys making sure all documentation is correct Log all checks on offenders in RHU Log all in coming and out going traffic on facility Answer phone calls along with radio traffic and contact coworkers, shift commander, first responders etc. as needed Clear count, sign movement log Enter the movement of offenders in DCIS Enter movement of offenders in housing units I am in charge of a unit Determine if sanitation standards are being met by housing porters and provide needed cleaning supplies along with documentation Input offender earnings on a monthly basis Hiring and firing of porters Conduct weekly cell inspections Work visitation and all other posts as needed Participate in all emergency drills Completed all DOC required trainings
