San Juanita Hernandez

Correctional Officer
Alice,Texas

Summary

I was an observant officer with 15 years of service, who put everyone's safety as a priority.

I was grounded, and had the inmates respect by treating them humanely.

If I ran into a rambunctious one, I'd be able to deescalate the situation, with verbal intervention, and avoid further problems.

I was an excellent communicator, radio and telephonewise.

I remained diligent on making security rounds.

I randomly did pat searches during mass movement to deter contraband.

I inventoried chemical agents, keys and use of force equipment proficiently.

I also trained a lot of the cadets who had just come onto our unit as a mentor.

I have enough knowledge to be a fair, firm and consistent officer, and supervisor.

I am approachable and will always want to see my coworkers succeed.

Work History

Correctional Officer V

Texas Department Of Criminal Justice
San Diego, TX

  • I conducted searches of inmates, cells, and prison grounds to detect contraband or illegal activities.
  • I maintained order in the prison by monitoring inmate behavior and intervening when necessary.
  • I was always aware of inmate behavior, and had developed a "sixth sense" knowing when something was bound to happen, and I'd call it in to the supervisor.
  • I worked primarily in central control after having worked in the inmates living quarters, and had "paid my dues". In Central Control, I did a daily inventory of carry on person "pepper spray" , along with their weight, keys, use of force equipment, including, but not limited to, hand and leg restraints, riot batons, transport bags, etc.
  • I was the "eyes and ears" of the unit, meaning I had to be aware of people's location at all times, and be able to make contact with any and everyone at any given time.
  • I would answer calls for the agency in a professional and helpful manner. I'd patch calls through to the right department and/or Supervisor.
  • In addition, I also worked in the inmate dorms/living areas holding security in close proximity with the inmates.
  • I also held security in the Medical Department, which entailed of me calling inmates over to the medical department to take their medication, and receive medical treatment.
  • I was also reliable in the sense that when someone radioed something in to me involving an inmate such as a fight, illness, belligerent behavior, etc... I was always alert and would echo the radio traffic for all others to stop movement and aid officers if applicable in a rapid and concise manner.
  • I had knowledge in working Visitation on the weekends where I'd search visitors upon entering the facility with a metal detector, as well as conducting a thorough pat search of the same sex individuals. In addition to that, I'd process the visitors information into the system and record their visit.
