As a sophomore majoring in environmental science and sustainable development with a passion for marine science, I am interested in expanding my knowledge, understanding, and experience through a REU internship this summer. Participating in this internship will provide me with greater access to the environments that I plan to pursue after graduation.
· Examined different species of marine fish and invertebrates and identified them using their morphology to gain greater insights into the health of marine environments
· Explored the coral reefs and the many marine organisms they protect to better understand their intricate relationships and how disruptions can impact entire ecosystems
· Volunteered at an active coral propagation site to enhance reef resilience and promote biodiversity
· Investigated the sustainability differences in artisanal and commercial fishing to capture the ecological impacts of each on habitats, tourism, and fisheries
· Achieved advanced open water scuba certification including Nitrox certification
· Collaborated with rural communities to understand trash management challenges and identify long-term solutions that fit their needs in a sustainable manner
· Volunteered at local women's and children’s shelter and school by building an easily maintained farm to provide greater food security at lower costs
· Taught children life skills and supported English proficiency through group games.
· Volunteered at an elephant sanctuary that included feeding, bathing, and introducing enrichment activities to elephants
· Explored local culture through religion, history, food, language, and personal conversation
· Elected Secretary with responsibilities that include social media and website management
· Increased online presence to reach alumni and parent audience to increase donations
· Capture critical actions during Executive Board meetings to support productivity in meeting team goals and objectives
· Send out weekly emails to update team members about scheduled events and meetings to improve communication and increase team member participation
As a young woman in STEM with a passion for marine life, going to school in the Midwest has not necessarily allowed me to fully explore my interests. I am eager to immerse myself in hands-on research experiences that align with my academic and professional aspirations.
My passion for marine biology has also been spurred by a love for exploration and cultural immersion. I have always been drawn to traveling, seizing every opportunity to learn about diverse cultures and ecosystems around the world. These experiences have not only broadened my perspective but have also instilled in me an appreciation for the importance of global interconnectedness to truly make advancements in marine conservation.
Looking ahead, I am committed to pursuing a career in marine science, with a focus on coral reef propagation and the protection of delicate ecosystems. I am particularly interested in exploring the dynamics of shark migration patterns and investigating how environmental and anthropogenic factors influence their behavior and survival. By conducting research in this field, I hope to shed light on the complex interactions between marine species and their habitats, ultimately working to help find conservation strategies to protect our oceans for future generations.
I am confident that the research internship opportunity at your institution will provide me with the fundamental skills and experience to make meaningful contributions to the field of marine science. I am eager to collaborate with like-minded researchers and mentors who share my passion for environmental and marine conservation.
Thank you for considering my application. I am extremely excited about the prospect of contributing to your research endeavors and furthering my academic and professional goals. I look forward to the opportunity to continue to explore my passion.
Warm regards,
Sara Stortstrom
