Digital Archivist (Contract)

  • Assess copyright, provenance, and privacy for a wide variety of materials, carefully balancing public access standards with respect for potential legal and cultural restrictions
  • Metadata creation: Develop standardized and uniform controlled vocabularies, manually create metadata for over 2,000 items held by the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation Tribal Library, and conduct regular quality control reviews and metadata remediation
  • Conduct historical and genealogical research to identify people, places, dates, or other necessary information for publicly accessible digital assets
  • Transcribe handwritten notes, letters, labels, and other texts for the purpose of creating accurate metadata for curated indigenous materials uploaded to the Library digital collection
  • Coordinate and communicate regularly with project stakeholders including the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation, the Church History Library, and private donors of materials in the NWBSN collection
  • Maintain positive working relationships with all stakeholders to ensure ongoing success of the project
  • Write, edit, or contribute copy for public-facing materials including the digital collection landing page and Marginalia newsletter
  • Present on the NWBSN project at the Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists (CIMA), April 2023
  • Train and supervise a student assistant
  • Create training materials and instructional guides
  • Conduct regular student evaluations and one-on-one meetings, and assist with interviews and evaluations unit-wide
  • Participate in Library committees organized to address topics such as file management procedures, metadata workflows, and harmful language and content statements
  • Assist and contribute to digital projects as needed using Omeka S and CONTENTdm software.

  • Establish copyright and fair use permissions with the Church History Library, the holding institution of the Brigham Young papers.
