Community Professional Development Activities

St. Joseph Chaldean Catholic Church – National Marrow   Donor Program (NMDP) - January 2025

Service learning - Volunteering

Category: Advocacy Activity T6

Description: I engaged in   patient-focused advocacy by volunteering a total of 7 hours at the bone   marrow drive hosted by my church to help register donors for the National   Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). Recognizing the severe shortage of Middle   Eastern donors—which creates life-threatening disparities in transplant   access—I created and distributed educational flyers to raise community   awareness (2 hours). I also assisted with on-site donor registrations and   educated participants about the simple cheek swab process and how their   genetic match could save a life (5 hours).. This experience highlighted how   community efforts can create life-changing opportunities for patients in need. It also reflects the pharmacist’s role as a patient advocate in   preventive care, mobilizing communities to address needs before crises arise.

I learned about this opportunity during Mass at my local   church and felt it would be a meaningful way to give back. In the future, it   will be rewarding to know I contributed to a nonprofit organization that is   creating a welcoming environment for youth, high schoolers, Chaldeans, and   all Catholics, a place where they can dedicate time to faith and community.

Chaldean Community Foundation - May 2024

Chaldean Community Hall, Michigan

Service learning - Volunteering

Category: Service-Learning Activity T3

Description: The event   was held at the Chaldean Community Foundation in Michigan on May 5th, 2024. I   helped collect and distribute donations that included medicine, first aid   supplies, clothing, blankets, and other essential items for war-affected   regions in the Middle East. This event reinforced the value of compassion and   assistance. It brought me back to the experience of living during the war in   my country and the need that my family and I experienced. It is a privilege   to be able to provide assistance to people in need. I had the privilege to   meet pharmacists and other healthcare professionals, hand in hand, to give   back. Connecting pharmacy with this community service highlights how   pharmacists are able to make a difference beyond clinical settings. I enjoy dedicating about 8 hours   annually to these types of organizations that provide aid for war-zoned   countries. This event was specific to the Middle East. We accepted donations   from the community, private clinics, and anyone who wanted to help. This   event helped me reshape my perspective as a future pharmacist, and it increased   my awareness of the pharmacist's role in humanitarian aid. I plan to   hopefully integrate these experiences into my career by seeking more   volunteer opportunities to give more and get to meet professionals who are   compassionate and advocate for others in need.

One World Medical Mission - September 2024

Chaldean Church Michigan

Category: Service-Learning Activity T2

Description: This event   was held at a community Chaldean church, where we organized a fall festival   on September 16th, 2023. We helped collect donations from games, petting zoo,   and food that gathered many families around the community. I helped organize   and set up tables, chairs, tents, and games. This festival helped us collect   donations to be able to purchase winter necessities and holiday gifts for the   underprivileged families in the community also part of the money will be   donated for medication and/or needed items will be shipped to the Middle East   for families in need. Participating   in these events reminds me of how fortunate I am to be able to stand for   people in need. These 5-6 hours took a short amount of time from one day of   my life to make a great impact on so many homes that hold families from   different ages. It will bring joy and comfort to those people. This is what I   strive for when I dedicate my future to health care. As healthcare workers,   we can have a voice to unite communities to help people in need. It was such   an enjoyable and rewarding experience. As a refugee who escaped my home   country during a war, I feel for these people needing medication, food, daily   necessities, and holiday joy of gifts. I had the privilege to get to know people in my community that does and give much more; it only pushed me to   look forward to more events like this. I met one of my idols in healthcare.   She is a pharmacist who owns two pharmacies and is also the founder of One World Medical Mission Organization, which helps injured people worldwide and   provides medical assistance, food, and clothing to countries in need. I hope   in the future, I can be a member of an organization similar to this. I hope that next time I can dedicate more time to be more involved and meet more   people.

In my group, we   wanted to focus on raising awareness about PCOS. We submitted our flyer that   was used and handed out to the visitors at the HUB and DAC in April 4th, 2024.  I learned the importance of raising   awareness in the community about a topic that might be a struggle for many   women.
