Volunteer Experience

California Pacific Medical Center, Pacific Heights campus, San Francisco: Falls Prevention and Rounding Program

Supervisor D'Vorah Rose, 415-600-1459, Rosed1@sutterhealth.org

  • I volunteered 121 hours from March 2018 to January 2019 at California Pacific Medical Center, Pacific Heights campus, on the medical surgical unit.
  • I implemented the Falls Prevention program, which involved inspecting patient rooms for tripping hazards, ensuring call bells and personal items were within reach, and reminding patients to wear nonslip socks and call for assistance before moving around the room. I also confirmed that the bed and chair alarms were activated and ensured that the bed rails were up and the beds were in their lowest position.
  • I rounded on the patients frequently and spent time getting to know them, answering their questions, and keeping them company.
  • I assisted the nurses whenever possible by grabbing items from the stock room, water, or food for the patients.
  • I trained new volunteers in the unit and introduced them to the fall prevention program.

  • I volunteered for 30 hours at the Pomeroy Center in many different areas.
  • I assisted the art teacher in providing art lessons to adult and teen clients, helping many attendees create beautiful works of art.
  • I tended the garden on the grounds, raking leaves, pulling weeds, and planting seedlings with the adult clients.
  • I supervised swim lessons with the teen clients, ensuring that the attendees followed the pool rules and that all clients safely walked to and from the pool.
  • I spend numerous hours connecting with the teen clients and getting to know them on a deeper level. We played card games and took dance and yoga classes together.
