Navy Special Warfare Human Performance Program (HPP), Performance Dietitian position performs administrative and clinical duties to advance nutrition, health, and performance. This includes nutrition planning, counseling, and documentation based on the most current practices, whereby advising chain of command as needed to the most relevant and pertinent nutritional issues to implant care strategies. Assessments typically involve biochemical analysis interpretation with appropriate recommendations to treat deficiencies or sub-optimal levels, and advance health and performance. Additional daily practices include individual and group counseling, conducting and interpreting body composition analysis, develop nutrition protocols and guidelines for surgery, rehabilitation, and performance, along with supplement review and education. Regular education materials are reviewed and developed to further nutrition understanding, and is essential when working for all Group EIGHT main training sites in Hawaii, San Diego, and Virginia Beach. Documentation of all encounters in SPEAR and Genesis are done regularly to ensure records are accurate and current, and collaboration with medical staff is done regularly for continuation of care. The Nutrition Department dietitian work’s collaboratively with physical therapy, strength and conditioning, and psychology to coordinate wholistic and strategic planning to meet the needs of soldiers, and progress performance and recovery. Training and mission related care involves creating catering menus and working with Navy chefs to provide the most nutritious meals possible at the right time. Regular work is done to implement new nutrition provisions for operators and divers, including policies addressing mission nutrition. Currently working towards establishing research networks to further progress nutrition and supplementation during dives and missions while on a submarine.
