Recommendations

  • Karen Brown, MEd, Assistant Professor of English, Brigham Young University, 4094 Joseph F. Smith Building, Provo, UT, 84602-6107, (801) 422-8170, I am happy to recommend Sarai Pendleton. In my interactions with her in my ENGL 276 course, Sarai showed a passion for learning, unmatched dedication, and a desire to teach. I am certain she will be an outstanding employee. Sarai was an excellent student. In class, she listened attentively, participated willingly in group discussions, and submitted quality work that showed a knack for perceptive thinking and a solid grasp of English content. Sarai had some experience working with secondary students as part of her ENGL 276 practicum hours. During this time, she took a liking to her students, showed a desire to help them with their work, and demonstrated tenacity and drive. I have no doubt that Sarai will do well in any position she undertakes. She enjoys working with others, she has strong writing skills herself, and she has the ability to share her knowledge with others. I highly recommend her.
  • Dr. Jon Ostenson, Associate Professor, English Education, Brigham Young University, I am pleased to write a letter of recommendation for Sarai Pendleton. I taught Sarai in a course on grammar pedagogy during the Winter 2022 semester here at Brigham Young University. I was able to observe her work as a student and as a peer and to see evidence of her ability to plan effective instruction based on sound teaching theory. Sarai was a conscientious and competent student. She had a strong attendance record and was consistently prepared for class. She submitted her work on time and her work was of good quality, demonstrating solid skills in communicating her ideas in writing. Sarai was always an eager participant in small group discussions and was a valued member of the class. My observations reveal her strong work ethic, collegial personality, and good writing skills all of which seem important to this position. Of her coursework, I watched Sarai teach a 20-minute mini-lesson on a grammar principle to her classmates. Sarai taught on appositives and in designing her lesson she effectively applied the theoretical principles she'd been taught in the class. She sequenced activities well to provide the appropriate scaffolding and support for students, and she helped them apply the grammar principle to their own writing in a way that helped that concept stick for students. During her teaching, she was confident and clear in her explanations and instructions. I enjoyed having Sarai as a student and feel confident that she would be a good fit for your position. While I worked with her, she was a responsible and conscientious student, and she has a good talent for teaching as well as a commitment to understand and apply good practices. I recommend her to you for this position.
  • Brooklyn Daines, MTC In-Residence Portuguese and Spanish Tutoring Supervisor, Sarai has worked as a Portuguese teacher and tutor for the MTC for about three years now. She is incredibly gifted when it comes to helping others feel comfortable while also helping them commit to improvement. She teaches in a clear and concise manner and encourages change through specific and valuable feedback aimed towards enhancing specific skills more than just general changes. She has proved herself very knowledgeable when it comes to the nuances of language and understands it well enough to explain in helpful and simple ways to those who have not had as much experience. She constantly and consistently seeks to make advancements to her teaching style to better help her students and teach more effectively. I can personally attest that she has spent time watching recorded versions of each of her hundreds of tutoring appointments seeking to analyze and develop better activities for future lessons. I have been impressed time after time as I have watched her reach in new and innovative ways that help students truly apply the material they have been learning. She would make a fine addition to any team hoping to strengthen the student body population.
