Throughout my education, I've purposefully undertaken demanding courses and jobs that can develop my skills, from difficult STEM courses that give me the skills and knowledge to solve engineering problems outside of a practical environment, in order to take that information into a practical environment (like in a shop or on a job). Challenging coursework and deadlines have prepared me for fast paced work in an internship or job related to engineering and mechanics, with the organization and dedication necessary to be successful.
I worked as a construction assistant for a subcontractor in ME building a roof for a client, and later being dispatched as a subcontractor myself to do jobs independently. I learned basic construction skills, but also how to work within a team and collaborate effectively. Self advocacy was also necessary, as tools would not be brought and material would not be purchased on time without it. I learned how to do demolition safely, disposal of debris, pest extermination, some framing and roofing, and finishing, while adhering to both my supervisor and clients needs, such as time, price, quality, and safety.
I worked for a member of my family to assist in fixing and preparing his vehicle for racing, through his garage in jackson, NH. I learned shop etiquette, how to use a lift, how to use various shop tools, how to replace parts like tie rods and other undercarriage parts, and more exact skills like setting a camber and tilt on a vehicle for a specific upcoming race. I learned things spanning fixing major problems that were caused by extreme crashes and wear, to general maintenance, and preparation.
As a ski instructor, I taught ages 4-65 how to ski, ranging from expert to complete beginner. Alongside learning how to be personable and represent a company well, I learned patience and responsibility. I conducted both group sessions and individual private lessons, both requiring different levels of rigor and instruction, while observing strict safety codes and the responsibility of looking after small children for up to 5 hours. I also learned how to repair and maintain skiis.
