As part of a contracted position with both Options for Southern Oregon and while in private practice, I provided mental health services as well as other various duties to the juvenile youth that were detained in the juvenile detention center as follows:

  • Provided counseling support both long-term and short-term to juvenile clients detained in the detention center. Many of these youth also would have active co-occurring substance use disorders.
  • Developed with management and other staff a safety level system for youth who were experiencing mental health crisis and suicidality.
  • Completed safety screenings and developed safety plans as needed with the youth who were on the safety watch.
  • Upon evaluating youth's safety level, youth was either increased, decreased, maintained, or removed from the safety watch based upon a combination of what the youth reported, youth's known history, and staff report.
  • Coordinated with probation officers, staff, and management to develop Individualized Support Plans for youth who experienced challenges with extreme emotional disregulation that increased the safety risk both to the youth themselves as well as others.
  • Provided 24 hour crisis support to youth.
  • Developed with management and Staff a reward-based system that reinforces positive behavior from the youth.
  • Coordinated with probation officers both from Jackson County and Oregon Youth Authority regarding recommendations for placements for youth who were expected to not being released back into the community.
  • Provided support to Staff by processing through stressful situations that had occurred within the facility such as challenging de-escalations, restraints...etc.
  • Provided as needed conflict resolution sessions between youth or between youth and staff.
  • Coordinated care of youth who had outside providers such as therapists or psychiatric providers in order to support continuation of care while the youth was detained.
  • Coordinated with psychiatric providers and arranged virtual visits for youth who were wanting medication management services to support their mental health needs.
  • Communicated with guardians of youth as needed for coordination of services and completion of mental health assessments.
