Determines that conditions necessary for accurate tests are present; for example, lipid tests require the patient to be fasting
Annotate when patient last took which medications prior to tests
Researches questionable or unclear test requests to ensure accurate information is provided
Performs venipuncture or capillary collection of blood samples and properly labels the tubes, ensuring quantity of sample is sufficient for tests to be performed
Inspect sample to identify visual need to recollect
Receive patients, visitors and laboratory telephone calls
Determines nature of inquiry and directs the inquiry to the appropriate section or provides information from own knowledge or from materials located in office files, records, or hospital information system
Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of the section at all times
Inform physicians, nurses and attendants of specimen collection requirements and responsible testing section
Receives and logs in lab specimens from wards, clinics, and home collection
Assures all specimens are properly identified with last name, first name, family member prefix, complete or last four of the social security number; assures the proper paper work and correct specimen is submitted with all information required on each lab slip
Notify the appropriate clinic, or ward when specimen are incorrectly identified of submitted
Enter all specimen and patient data into hospital information system
Operate centrifuge to separate specimens
Refrigerates, store at room temperature, or freezes specimens as required
Packs specimens in arrive within required time limits and in usable condition for test being performed
Follow all regulatory and legal requirements for chain of custody of specimens when necessary
Utilize hospital information system to ensure timely shipping and return of results
Files all results of referral laboratory tests and distributes copies to appropriate department personal for entry and certification
