- Assemble and disassemble hemodialysis machines
- Initiates dialysis treatment and monitors patients and equipment
- Incorporates dialysate, according to formula
- Obtains and records pre-dialysis and post dialysis vital signs, temperature, and weight
- Explains dialysis procedure and operation of hemodialysis machine to patient before treatment to allay anxieties
- Cleans and prepares area of access, using antiseptic solution
- Inspects venous and arterial pressures as registered on equipment to ensure pressures are within established limits
- Calculates correct fluid removal or replacement during dialysis procedure according to unit protocols
- Monitors patient for adverse reaction and hemodialysis machine for malfunction and reports any abnormalities to the charge nurse immediately
- Discards dialysis supplies and sanitizes equipment
- Cannulates patients with correct needle according to physician’s prescription orders
- Utilizes knowledge of human anatomy, aseptic and sterile techniques and phlebotomy equipment to make the decision in the choice of the phlebotomy site
- Communicates with physicians for additional required information of laboratory specimens, such as, retrieving specimens, obtaining test results from reference laboratories, initiating order entry and patient registration, etc
- Instruct patients in the correct use of the specimen containers and the precise times of specimen collection
- Execute finger or heel sticks for micro-samples of capillary blood on neonates to adults as required.
