Work History
Lead Brewer
Pherm Brewing
10.2021 - Current
This job was the biggest challenge I have ever taken on in my life
I stepped into this role with little to no knowledge of the brewing industry and trade yet, within months I was promoted to lead brewer
I was and am responsible for running the day-to-day brewing operations of Pherm along with the owner and brew master
We work together directly every day to ensure that all aspects of production are running smoothly
This extends from the smallest of details to the largest
For example, our conversations and efforts might range from practical resource management to more abstract discussions surrounding recipe development and beer distribution
This was not a role that I sought out however, I was willing to completely commit to the goal of running Pherm
Slowly, I learned how to run the brewhouse, manage fermentation vessels, package finished product, and help efficiently manage consumable resources like cleaning chemicals and hops
Working directly with the owner, my job was to essentially learn all I could from him
His past experiences and expertise were invaluable for me and as such, I soaked up all of the knowledge he was willing to impart on me
This gave me some much-needed perspective which I used to become more comfortable within my role and thrive
Even when I felt in over my head, I relied on my training and brewing instincts to direct me
These teachings became second hand and within short time I was a trained lead brewer who could confidently direct day-to-day brewing operations
Considering I worked almost exclusively with the owner and brew master, I was not given much opportunity to manage others or prove myself as a someone who could teach others
Ultimately, this would be the catalyst for my desire to leave the brewing industry
I learned many other tertiary skills while doing this job and as such I value my experience at Pherm highly
Between the mechanical, logistical, and sales aspects of brewing that I learned, I feel as though I will be leaving this job a more well-rounded person and employee
I understand my training is quite niche and specific however, the speed at which I was able to undertake this role and earn the trust of the owners should hopefully reveal my dedication to a mission
Currently, I am learning more about the logistical side of the business and am being trained in how to develop relationships with salesmen as well as operate within an ever-changing market
These new opportunities are welcomed as I've always strived to expand my role within the company
I hope that my experience has trained me to learn on the fly while also efficiently managing people and resources within a face paced work environment.
Bartender
Pherm Brewing
01.2021 - 10.2021
This job was my first experience bartending and as such I had much to learn
Bartending requires a high level of social awareness, and this was the skill I honed the most during this job
My responsibilities outside of serving drinks were numerous however, managing customer demands was my priority
This included having knowledge of all the drinks we serve, ensuring that customers were satisfied, and managing resources to make sure the bar was clean and running efficiently
I was not tasked with managing coworkers however, as my confidence grew so did the confidence my managers had in me
Eventually, I would be given keys to open and close the bar and would routinely be asked to perform tasks only asked of trusted staff and managers
I would provide insight on behalf of our customers and attempt to relay their demands to upper management in the hopes that expectations were being met on both ends
At the same time, I was picking up shifts working with the brew staff and used this cross training to efficiently run things in both the front and back of house to my best ability
This part-time role would quickly become a full-time role, eventually leading to me becoming a brewer at Pherm.
Dockhand and Bar-back
Stan and Joe's Riverside
06.2019 - 10.2020
This job required me to be on my feet all day managing bar supplies, customers and boats coming in and out of the restaurant
I worked directly with management and customers to ensure that supplies were stocked, and patrons were safe leaving and boarding the docks
My role expanded with time there and eventually I would learn the basics of bartending and customer service that would help me transition to my next job.
