Volunteer Service Advocacy

  • 05/2017, 05/2017, 40, Global Medical Brigades, El Censo, Honduras, Student Volunteer, Dr. Lawrence Butler, MD, Worked with a group of volunteer students, doctors, and nurses to set up a mobile week-long medical/dental clinic in Honduras where community members have limited access to healthcare. In the months prior to the trip, met weekly with group of volunteers to fundraise, collect donations, and package goods and medical supplies. Performed patient interviews, eye exams, took vital signs, helped run the mobile pharmacy, and directly assisted physicians in patient care. As part of a holistic model, we educated families on drinking clean water, eating a diet high in nutrition, and the importance of oral hygiene while donating toothpaste and brushes. Additionally, we hand built eco-stoves in local homes with the goal of increasing sustainability and overall health. Personal Information

Hobbies: I played soccer and basketball through most of my childhood, so my hobbies today are largely outdoor and/or anything competitive. In my free time, I like to run, hike, or play tennis. In addition, I enjoy rollerblading or paddleboarding. When the outdoors are less hospitable, I always enjoy a good board game or going to an escape room. In medical school, I found experimenting in the kitchen to be an additional stress reliever. I enjoy cooking healthy foods for guests, co-workers, or those in need.
