Shannon's professional efforts center the City of Santa Monica's Sustainable City Plan and use the power of community to enhance our resources, prevent harm to the natural environment and human health, and benefit the social and economic wellbeing of the community for the sake of current and future generations.
Shannon Parry works passionately to create communities where environmental protection, economic vitality and social justice are woven into daily practice. She is The City of Santa Monica’s Chief Sustainability Officer and manages the City’s Office of Sustainability and the Environment which is responsible for climate action and adaptation, green building, green business, community gardens, sustainable procurement and toxics use reduction. Her work includes sustainability indicators, performance management, organizational development, and a host of urban planning and municipal sustainability projects. She currently oversees programs and policies that support Santa Monica’s citywide efforts to achieve Water Self- Sufficiency by 2030, Zero Waste by 2030, and Carbon Neutrality by 2050 or sooner.
Shannon was responsible for the update, implementation, and evaluation of the Santa Monica Sustainable City Plan. She authored the first Santa Monica Sustainable City Report Card and oversaw the development of the City’s Strategy for a Sustainable Local Economy, the Electric Vehicle Action Plan, and the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan. Shannon helped to create Buy Local Santa Monica and the Bike @ Work program, hosts the annual Sustainable Quality Awards, and oversaw the development of Santa Monica’s single use plastic bans and zero net energy building requirements.
