Dock Crew Member/Office Assistant

Action Water Sports at Lakeside Marina
South Lake Tahoe, CA
04.2022 - 06.2022
  • Lakeside Marina has an open mooring field, as well as an enclosed slip field with over 60 spots for private boat owners. We also have 18 rental boats available to the public.
  • As a dock hand I work with both the boat renters and the private boat owners. We use a small outboard skiff to transport people and boats between the dock and the mooring field
  • When boat owners arrive at the dock, I taxi them out to their boats. Once they return to the mooring field I taxi them back to the dock.
  • I also provide assistance tying bow lines to the anchor and fueling boats at the dock. We manually record gas pump totals and payment for each transaction.
  • We perform daily routine checks of all rental boats - Overall condition (damage checks), propeller and outdrive condition, engine oil and fluid levels, bilge water level, and warm-up test drives.
  • Daily jet ski fluid and maintenance checks (Sea Doo and Yamaha)
  • We use VHF radio to communicate with the rental office. When a boat is rented out, the office radios the dock to let us know the boat number and time of rental so we can then bring it from the boat slip to the loading dock and prepare it for customers.
  • We are responsible for educating the renters on how to operate the motorboat safely - Showing them the safety equipment (life preservers, fire extinguisher, swimmer flag, oars, fenders) and explaining when and how to use the equipment. Demonstrating how to operate the steering, throttle and shift controls, trim switch, kill switch, and other accessory switches.
  • We also rent water tow sports equipment with the boats such as tubes, wake boards, and skis. We are responsible for securing the tow rope to the boat and training customers on how to use the equipment safely.
  • Once we are done loading all passengers and gear onto the boat we captain them from the marina out to the end of our channel and drop them off, using the skiff to get back to the dock
  • Once the boat arrives back in the channel when the rental is over, we drive the skiff out to it, board the rental boat, park it back at the dock, and assist the renters in unloading all passengers and gear. We then fill the boats gas tank, check costumers out, perform a full boat check for any damages, clean the windows and upholstery, and scrub the deck in preparation for the next rental.
  • At the end of the day once all rental boats and mooring customers have returned, our shut down procedures include covering all boats, returning tow sports gear to the store, bringing the jet skis back into the marina from the beach, reeling in gas hoses and shutting down the gas pump.
  • Assist in boat and jet ski rescues when needed
  • Proficient at jet ski and boat oil changes
  • Greeted visitors or callers daily to handle questions or direct to appropriate staff.
