As a cashier worker in a fast-food restaurant, there are high expectations from not only your employers and coworkers, but from the customer as well. They expect neat, fast, and kind assistance from the employee who they will have direct contact with. Therefore, fast problem-solving skills were definitely a mandatory skill to possess, as well as having friendly communication skills.
Twice a year during high school, we were individually tasked to raise money for the school. I raised money over the phone and in-person with friendly communication and promoting skills. I always raised more than the requirement. This experience was very helpful for my time at the phone-a-thon where efficient and convincing communication skills were used to help raise money for MSOE.
Patterns of good communication skills are present especially working as a call team member for the admissions office because I am ultimately recruiting and convincing high school students and transfer student to apply and commit to MSOE.
Being employed as a team member for the WCD has been a great opportunity, one that is full of learning experiences and great coworkers. I have learned greater customer service skills that have helped with communication with clients- helping them feel safe, heard, and valued. It has also provided a place to learn fast-paced customer services and organizational skills.
As a team member employed for the WCD (Wisconsin Center District), I work the merchandise store at the UW-Milwaukee Arena, work available events at the Convention Center, and will start working the box office at the Miller Theater; all this while receiving great experience in customer service. I have also been trained certified for Sensory Inclusivity (KultureCity).
Working for the office of admissions at my university, I work as a call team member and office assistant. As a team member, I make minimum of 45 calls to prospective students within a 3-hour shift. Calls consist of application due dates, requirements for applying for our school, special events they should be on the lookout for, and overall encourage their commitment to MSOE. As an office assistance, I file, alphabetize and distribute applications from incoming students as well as transcripts. I also help in whatever is needed around the office.
As a call member for the Alumni Center at MSOE, I made an average of 20 calls during a 3-hour shift where I conversed with MSOE alums. The goal for these calls were to collect donations for funding student organizations/projects and university transformations.
