  • First boarded occupational medicine physician to assume this role, shortly following incident case of COVID-19 in Louisiana (which was treated at the VA).
  • Initial point of contact for all cases of COVID-19 amongst >2,500 employees, trainees, contractors, volunteers, students, and residents at the main Veterans Association hospital based in New Orleans and its seven associated Community Based Outpatient Centers (CBOCs); provided guidance regarding testing, contact tracing, quarantine, and return to work for all of these individuals, including nights and weekends; employees, supervisors, and administrative staff had on-demand access at all hours to my work cell and email.
  • Was the sole in-house provider often through pandemic surges, and particularly during Hurricane Ida in September 2021, which was classified as category 4 (as was Hurricane Katrina) and resulted in power outages lasting days to weeks as well as home and building damages throughout the state.
  • Served as consultatory member of the Pandemic Clinical Advisory Workgroup; Influenza and COVID-19 vaccination teams; Occupational Accidents Review Board; and Infection Control team.
  • Revised TB testing and respirator medical surveillance protocols.
  • Generated and contributed to protocols for testing, contact tracing, quarantine, and return to work of employees during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Notably accomplishments include a doubling of employee compliance with the Veterans' Health Administration flu vaccination mandate during initial year of tenure compared to prior years and 85% compliance with the COVID-19 vaccination mandate; as well as streamlining and improvement in care of occupational injuries and illnesses (including the workers' compensation process), more efficient recovery of employees and their return to work, and dramatic reduction in associated costs for the hospitals related to time off work and medical work up.
