Working at Camp Henlopen State Park, I had the opportunity to work as a counselor to a group of 10 boys, ages 8-12, in a two week, sleepaway camp setting. I helped facilitate and lead the children in group hiking, beach trips, fire building, team building games such as capture the flag and soccer, flora and fauna identification, skit and theater workshops, singing and story telling sessions, as well as leading both independent and collaborative artistic projects such as weaving and sun-printing . A surprising aspect of the job and skill that I acquired was creating an understanding, nurturing but also fair and encouraging environment for children struggling with home-sickness and interpersonal conflict. I developed skills of de-escalating situations of extreme emotion and facilitating discussion between campers.. This job was often a 24-hours a day commitment and I learned to be alert and available for everything at all times.
Working at Panacea provided me with an extensive learning opportunity in hospitality, and managing multiple responsibilities in a faced paced environment. Being a local coffee shop, it was important to cultivate a welcoming and organized atmosphere and attitude in order to attract both returning and first time costumers. During my time at Panacea I was able to establish wonderful working and personal relationships with everyone on the team, learning valuable skills in interpersonal communication, team building, direction following, and multi-tasking. I was also able to utilize my creative abilities as well, designing posters, advertisements, and drink menu's for the shop.
Working at the Christian Community Camp in Stroud, England gave me the opportunity to work in a very limited, make-shift kitchen set up ( camp stoves with propane) cooking three meals a day for a group of nearly a hundred campers and twenty-five staff members. Skills such as lugging cooking water, washing, peeling and dicing, large quantities of vegetables as well as making vegetarian and vegan equivalents for all meals were just some of the many challenges faced.. After cooking we were also expected to set tables, serve food, cleans tables, do dishes, and dispose of waste.
Working in a kitchen like this required complete team cooperation and I acquired skills in working in a extremely stressful and face passed environment, taking direction, all the while remaining up beat and friendly.
Working at Time Square Bagels gave me the unique opportunity and responsibility to,three days a week, open the shop at 5 am and prep all the necessary food and beverage for the day. I did all of this work solo for the first hour of the morning before my boss arrived. This experience gave me the opportunity to be self-directed and motivated in my work, following and completing tasks set out for me, taking stock of inventory, and being proactive and planning what ingredients/sandwich fixings/ baked goods needed to be made during the day and making them. This job also allowed me an opportunity in creative thinking and problem solving, as I was frequently instructed to help develop sandwich ideas and cream cheese flavors.
