Roepke Laboratory

New Brunswick, NJ
01.2023 - 05.2023
  • The rise in obesity rates is attributed to endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) found in flame retardants, particularly organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs). The study I facilitated focused on OPFR exposure in perinatal mice, revealing effects such as imbalances in glucose homeostasis, behavioral issues, disruptions in the gut microbiome, and alterations in gene expression. This research also explores the potential exacerbation of OPFR exposure in fetuses due to maternal obesity, impacting the blood-brain barrier and influencing energy homeostasis in neonates. My role in this lab involved dosing pregnant dams with controlled substances and OPFRs, with subsequent analysis of neonatal brain and liver tissues, as well as measurement of anogenital distance.
