Hello, my name is Soi Yun, and I am studying musical performance. After three years of preparation and examinations, I was accepted into university and have since performed twice, including my debut stage. Having started my academic journey later than most of my peers, I felt a strong urgency to quickly gain practical experience in my field.
Initially, my focus was entirely on developing my technical skills, taking on leadership roles, and competing with my peers. However, during the second half of the year, I had the valuable opportunity to perform for four months. Living and practicing alongside more experienced seniors led me to an important realization: I needed to improve my communication skills and understand people and society better, rather than just focusing on technical skills. I had been preoccupied with succeeding in auditions and gaining others' approval, which caused me to lose sight of the essence of acting-the importance of connecting authentically with others on and off stage.
Talking with a representative from the last company, he asked me, 'When do you think the word 'daily' was coined?' I answered, 'During the Industrial Revolution,' reasoning that people needed similar working environments to establish routines and live comparable lifestyles. His response indicated that this perspective was why I was selected for the production; he was seeking someone who made different choices, as I had. This willingness to take unconventional paths has been characteristic of my journey.
Throughout my life, I have preferred to pursue what genuinely benefits me, even when that path appears bold to others. When making my first major decisions, such as giving up my qualifications from an international high school and choosing my field of study, I opted for routes that weren't necessarily the most conventional.
Since then, my mother has affectionately called me a 'cockroach,' noting how I deviate from the family roadmaps, adapting and trying different things until I achieve my dreams. I firmly believe that life is about making choices and embracing the responsibilities that come with them.
