Sophie McDougall

VPL, research branch of New York University, aims to elevate underrepresented voices through performing arts. Worked under Joe Salvatore and Keith Huff, responsibilities included attendance of weekly team meetings to discuss future projects/research, conducted interviews of research subjects, and transcribed interviews into VPL transcript. Worked to take current social justice issues/conflicts and transfer them into high-quality theatre performances that force audience to think, hoping to disrupt social and political bias. Worked on projects surrounding gender, race, healthcare discrimination, toxic masculinity, and political polarization.

Worked in-office 10 hours a week copy-editing student-written articles; fixed grammar mistakes, followed AP-style guidelines, fact-checked, re-organized articles, gave writing tips, and ensured each article was ready for print.

Specialty store for traditional Hawaiian poke bowls. Kept work areas clean and organized, washed dishes, made poke bowls, sushi burritos, and sodas for customers efficiently, organized online orders, and developed strong customer service skills.

Studying under Raven Leilani, Catherine Barnett, Mark Bibbins, and Jonas Hassen Khemiri, this month long program required daily submissions of original poetry and writing pieces. Trained in editing and appraisal of each others’ work, and assigned daily poetry and fictional readings. Performed public readings and studied Professors' published work.

Made smoothies and acai bowls for customers, worked well with other team members and staff, learned all required tasks quickly and accurately, washed dishes, and organized food items.

Worked with teachers to lesson plan, taught students swimming lessons, assisted with music lessons and physical education classes, assisted during field trips, and gained knowledge on working in a student-teacher environment.
