As limited term Counselor for 6 months I have had the opportunity to learn the Classification process which applies to the Mission of CVSP. I have learned how to gather information from interviews, evaluations, reports, from multiple sources to assist in the classification of an inmate. Classification shall take into consideration the inmates needs, interests and desires, his/her behavior and placement score in keeping with the department and institution's or facility's program and security missions and public safety. I have learned how to prepare and present a case to a classification committee, documenting pertinent information for transfers, program participation, privilege groups, and custody designation which shall be made by a classification committee. I have gained the knowledge of how important it is to document an initial classification by establishing all case factors from the offender's demographics to criminal history (escape, arson, sex), potential holds, warrants, detainer. The current placement score, reasoning for transfer to current location. The current work/privilege group along with eligibility for special programs. How to look into Security Threat Groups, enemy concerns and the review of any confidential information. Ensure the persons medical/psychiatric/disability concerns have been addressed and accommodated if needed. I have gained knowledge on the classification score system and when to apply or lessen points for placement score. The goal is to establish the security control need for that person. I know the importance of Due Process and meeting deadlines and establishing effective communication to ensure he/she comprehends what is being presented. I have collaborated with other agencies to retrieve multiple types of reports to properly classify an inmate. Gathering this information along with interviewing an Inmate gives me a better understanding of his/her needs and providing an administrative procedure for carrying out a program for his/her adjustment, education, and skill training. As a committee we can properly facilitate and prepare for a successful reintegration of the individuals in our care back to their communities equipped with the tools to be drug-free healthy, and employable members of society by providing education, treatment, rehabilitative, and restorative justice programs, all in a safe and humane environment.
