Job overview

  • Provide therapeutic services to Veterans whose employability or job adjustment is impaired by severe physical, mental, emotional or other disability, or by lack of basic education or job skills.
  • Independently carry out a wide range of difficult cases involving special procedures.
  • Work closely with members of the interdisciplinary team including physicians, state vocational rehabilitation counselors, therapists, social workers, peer specialists, and other care providers within the facility, training centers, and placement services throughout the community.
  • Determine the vocational goals and objectives of the Veteran based on referral from a professional staff member or by interviewing the Veteran.
  • Determines the areas of vocational interests, and decides what services such as job seeking skills training, resume development, or interview skills training the Veteran may require to successfully obtain suitable employment or providing exploratory training programs to determine the individual's work capacity.
  • Utilize the practices of the Evidence Based Models, such as measured base care (MBC), to provide individualized job finding and job retention services to patients with significant barriers to employment.
  • Conduct vocational assessments using observational and interviewing techniques to evaluate vocational problems associated with psychiatric and substance abuse patients.
  • Assess each participant’s skills and limitations, and match these to the best placement fit that is available.
  • Analyze mental and physical disabilities of each veteran to identify how those barriers affect motivation, adjustment to training and difficulty in employment placement.
  • Assess each individual veteran’s training needs to meet the client's vocational goals and objectives.
  • Administer the placement of all transitional employment positions in the Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) Transitional Work Experience (TWE) program.
  • Act as the primary contact with transitional employment supervisors and present a positive image, requiring clear and consistent communication skills, negotiation skills, and conflict resolution of immediate and impending issues that could jeopardize the therapeutic goals of the participant and the program.
  • Provide case management for all veterans participating in CWT/TWE; monitor the aspects of care relating to abstinence from drugs and alcohol through random urine drug screens (UDS) and aftercare participation compliance.
  • Note participant progress, record attendance and participation, and write progress notes in the participant’s clinical records.
  • Develop and implement individualized vocational treatment plans designed to address areas of need such as legal or financial issues, computer skills training, resume development, interview preparation, & assistance with work search.
  • Coordinate and oversee the day-to-day activities of all patients that are participating in the CWT/TWE program; this involves assessment of patient’s strengths and barriers to any transitional placement and the insight to provide accommodations as needed to assist in the transitional employment placement process.
  • Act as the liaison between the transitional employment supervisor, the patient, and the CWT/TWE program.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions relating to job site and work behaviors, assess and determine at risk/safety issues in the work environment, and assist the patient in the coordination of his or her total care as it relates to the work environment.
  • Familiar with other medical staff within the hospital, family members, and community resources that may be involved and utilized in the patients total treatment plan.
