- Nursing care of patients requiring intensive preoperative and post-operative surgical care with emphasis on thoracic surgery.
- Monitoring patients before and after lung transplantation, cannulation for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), lung resection, and repairs of the trachea, esophagus, or diaphragm.
- Intervening during states of septic, hypovolemic, hemorrhagic and/or cardiogenic shock.
- Participating in arterial, central venous, and pulmonary artery line placements, chest tube placement and removal, intubation and extubation, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), percutaneous tracheostomy placement and cannulation for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
- Respiratory management in both the mechanically-ventilated and spontaneously -breathing patients.
- When I started working, the unit was a thoracic and vascular unit and then it switched to a thoracic and lung transplant unit. My job description during the vascular time also included:
- Caring for patients pre and post abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, vascular bypass surgery, limb ischemia, and arterial/venous dissection.
