Teaching Philosophy And Goals
I believe that effective educators will design their classrooms and craft their lessons to accomplish two primary objectives: 1) To inspire a lifelong love of learning and 2) To foster a sense of personal growth and responsibility.
Obviously, educators must emphasize the development of knowledge and skills pertinent to their subject area. However, I believe a holistic approach to learning must not only take into account a student's academic growth, but their personal growth as well. Good teaching is not merely concerned with the successful absorption of information. Rather, the most effective educators will concern themselves with whether or not their students are actively engaging with new ideas and ways of thinking about the world. I believe an outstanding educator has the ability to awaken a child's natural sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around them, and to identify and encourage their unique potential. This helps to ensure a firm foundation for life and leadership as they grow and mature into adulthood.
An outstanding teacher must be intentional about creating a student environment that is both challenging, yet highly supportive. It is imperative that teachers work tirelessly to create clear and consistent expectations for their students in a way that maintains high standards of work and behavior and inspires a desire for excellence. Once those expectations and boundaries have been firmly established, students then have the freedom to learn, create, discover, and uniquely express themselves within those boundaries.
