During a thirteen year tenure as a DIS-Aide II, I have gained a wide variety of skills required in a Special Education setting.

• Assisted certificated staff/specialists with instruction and related activities of assigned learning environment.
• Maintain confidentiality of pupil and school information.
• Assist students in developing independence and self-help skills, including hygiene, eating, social, community, vocational and leisure/recreational skills.
• Trained in the use of many types of AAC devices, including eye gaze, and software programs used in the special educational setting.
• Knowledge of diseases and disabilities commonly afflicting assigned special education population. Basic medical knowledge and understanding of simple medical procedures.
• Child guidance principles and practices, especially as they relate to school-age children with multiple and severe emotional, physical, and special learning challenges
• Proper use and positioning of specialized equipment and apparatus used for severely, physically, emotionally and multi-handicapped students. *
• Provide specialized physical health care services for students, including but not limited to: diapering, catheterizations, g-tube feedings, trach suctioning, and medication administration for students when trained and supervised (direct or indirect) by the credentialed school nurse.**
• Communicate effectively with students, faculty, specialists, parents, and other adults.
• Be a productive and active team member.

** Worked as a one to one with many medically fragile students throughout my tenure. Trained by the school RN(Certificated) to monitor and assist students with their medical needs.

• Part of an unique team that practiced Continuity of Care. Continuity of Care practices support the development of secure attachments and strong positive relationships as well as a secure base for exploration and learning (Honig, 2002).
• Provided support during transitions between classrooms or activities, ensuring smooth adjustments for young children.
• Managed classroom materials effectively, ensuring a clean, organized space conducive to learning at all times.
• Increased parent involvement in children''s education by maintaining open communication and providing regular updates on child progress.
• Maintained a safe and nurturing environment by adhering to state regulations and implementing consistent routines for care.
